Kurdish Food

My uncles oldest son had us over for dinner tonight. He and his wife live in a detached apartment on top of her moms house. They had a large balcony area, and we ate dinner there out in the open, this was the view at sunset:

This is the dinner we had:

Kurdish Greens, eaten like a dressing free salad:

Cucumber salad with olives and lemons:

Chickpea Soup:

Okra stew:

White rice with pasta and ground beef garnish:

Red Rice, the color is from tomato paste, it tastes better than it sounds!

Baked Chicken:

Figs picked from the downstairs tree:

  2. The Okra looks amazing, mA. What spices were used for the dish? It almost looks desi. In Pakistani okra, which we call Bhindi, we usually dont make it with liquid in it we cook it out. I had some for dinner yesterday! What type of Figs are these?--What was their taste like, there are so many different types and it's so hard to come across good ones in the US it seems!

  3. We dont put any spices in the soup, we dont put spices in most dishes actually, Kurds tend to like simple dishes where the flavor of the vegetable is supreme. There are soo many figs and fig tree's here, you can get a kilo (over 2 pounds) for about 50 cents
